Powering the Robot

Fun Robot

A battery with a capacity of 1 amp-hour should be able to continuously supply a current of 1 amp to a load for exactly 1 hour, or 2 amps for 1/2 hour, or 1/3 amp for 3 hours, etc., before becoming completely discharged

Here are the characteristics of the Duracell line of batteries. This is to provide a comparison of the various cell sizes. The different brands and technologies have different ratings but the size comparisons pretty much apply.

It is now time to decide on how we plan to supply the power needed to operate the robot. The Arduino needs to be supplied with 9 volts through the power supply connector. Due to the high current draw of the servos and ultrasonic sensor, we will need to supply those with a series configuration of one and one half volt AA cells. This will provide the required six volts which are to be directly connected to all three devices. At six volts the four series one and one half volt AA cell configuration will supply approximately three times the power as the nine-volt battery over the same time period. The additional power capacity provided by the utilization of the AA cells would easily accommodate the later addition of an increase in peripheral devices such as another couple of servos and an LCD display.

The four one and one half volt AA cells will require a battery holder that provides a series connection to give the required six volts. The nine-volt battery will require a battery cable and the appropriate male connector to fit the male power connector on the Arduino controller board.

The two battery supplies will make the robot completely self-contained. Once wired, mechanically constructed and programmed, the project will be ready to operate. We better start thinking of a name for our robot.
